Flood disturbance mediates the strength of stream trophic cascades caused by trout

چکیده
Abstract Trophic cascades are important features of aquatic ecosystems, but much variation in their strength remains unexplained. Disturbance could restrict cascade occurrence by limiting predator distribution, and increase lowering defended herbivore abundance. These possibilities were investigated 20 New Zealand rivers varying both flooding disturbance (measured bed movement) presence non‐native predatory trout. Trout often, not always, associated with indirectly increasing algal abundance compared to similar native galaxiid fishes. Floods explained (1) resetting such that minima related movement; (2) preventing restricting trout the most disturbed rivers; (3) potential removing herbivores. observations indicate strong nonlinear influences on trophic maximum which will be consider as climate change alters regimes.

متن کاملPredation on mutualists can reduce the strength of trophic cascades.
Ecologists have put forth several mechanisms to predict the strength of predator effects on producers (a trophic cascade). We suggest a novel mechanism--in systems in which mutualists of plants are present and important, predators can have indirect negative effects on producers through their consumption of mutualists. The strength of predator effects on producers will depend on their relative c...
متن کاملSubsidy hypothesis and strength of trophic cascades across ecosystems.
Ecosystems are differentially open to subsidies of energy, material and organisms. This fundamental ecosystem attribute has long been recognized but the influence of this property on community regulation has not been investigated. We propose that this environmental attribute may explain variation in the strength of trophic cascades among ecosystems. Simply because of gravity, we should predict ...
